Mounts
There are three basic camera mounts that are allowed by the FAA for aerial cinematography. They come in many different forms, but generally fall in these three categories:
- GYRO STABILIZED BALL MOUNTS
These enclosed sphere mounts are many times called ball mounts. Very stable, and can produce high quality images using various formats. - NOSE MOUNTS
Most of these mounts are designed for a forward POV and are many times called belly mounts. Some are fixed position or hard mounts, while others are single axis (Tilt), statically stabilized systems. They can attach to a helicopter or fixed wing with various formats of film or video. - DOOR MOUNTS
Most are designed for helicopter usage, although there are some fixed wing applications. Also known as side mounts, these mounts can be adapted to carry gyro stabilizers. Various formats of film or video can be used.
Choosing a camera mount system should be driven by the scene. Each system has its own pros and cons and should be used according to its attributes. Altitude, target being filmed, length of scene, film, HD or SD, budget, are only a few elements that need to be examined to ensure the right choice of mount. Many times several systems are used during a production. HDaerial will consult with you to determine the correct mount for your project.
