Door Mounts
Door mounts are often referred to as side mounts. These mounts isolate the vibration produced by the aircraft. Most door mounts have a large balance arm that can roll so that you will be able to hold the horizon. In addition, you have control over pan, tilt, zoom, and focus. Most of the mounts today come with gyro assist capabilities and provide a stable image that is closer to the stability you find in ball mount stability. The mount can be positioned on the right side (pilot side) or left side of aircraft. The right side many times is the preferred side, although left side filming can be accomplished. Windscreens mounted forward of the door hinges help to divert wind from hitting the lens.
By the cinematographer having direct viewing through the camera, incredible footage can be captured by a seasoned aerial cinematographer. Many mounts have the ability to be used in non-aerial applications such as marine and land vehicles.
Door mounts have limitations with straight ahead POVs at high air speeds, focal lengths longer than 250mm for long periods of time and straight-down or 90 degree shooting.
